How to Plan a Family Vacation at Wildman Adventure Resort

There’s a moment on every family trip when you catch yourself thinking, “I want to remember this.” Maybe it’s your kid’s face the first time they paddle into a rapid, or the laughter around the campfire when everyone’s a little tired, a little sun-kissed, and a lot happy.

Those are the moments Wildman Adventure Resort was built for.

If you’re dreaming of a family vacation that’s more than just a change of scenery — one that actually brings you closer — this guide will walk you through how to plan your best-ever trip to Wildman Adventure Resort, a true Midwest family adventure destination tucked into the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

I’ve spent the past four summers helping families customize and plan their trips out to Wildman. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching candid, genuine smiles take over someone’s face when they conquer something they didn’t know they could do!

Okay, let’s break down how to start planning the best family vacation of the summer.

We’ll cover:

  • Whether Wildman is a good fit for your family
  • When to visit
  • Where to stay (camping, glamping, or cabins)
  • How to choose adventures for all ages
  • Sample itineraries (weekend and 3–4 night stays)
  • Practical tips for a smooth, low-stress trip

Is Wildman Adventure Resort Right for Your Family?

A family poses with their guides after a zipline tour at the Menominee River Outpost.

The short answer: if your family enjoys being outside and trying new things together, you’re probably in the right place.

Wildman is especially great for:

  • Families who want more than a hotel + pool: You’re looking for something that feels meaningful — shared challenge, new experiences, and real time together.
  • First-timers and experienced adventurers: Every adventure is guided by our professional and enthusiastic staff who are stoked to meet you at your skill level. With 8 adventures from mild to wild, there’s something for families of all experience levels.
  • Kids who like to move: Climbing and ziplining, paddling through rapids, swimming in the river, hiking along the water, playing volleyball barefoot in the sand. Wildman’s got it all.
  • Parents who also want to have fun: You’re not just watching from the sidelines; you’re belaying, paddling, ziplining, and laughing right alongside your kids.
  • Multi-family or extended-family trips: Cabins side-by-side, kids running between campsites, grandparents watching the adventures and joining the campfire.

If your ideal family trip involves a mix of adventure, nature, and simple, unhurried time together, Wildman fits beautifully.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Wildman with Kids?

Wildman’s main adventure season runs from mid-April through early October, and each part of the season has its own personality.

Spring (for braver, older kids & teens)

Rapids tend to be bigger and more intense in spring, which makes it a great time for adventurous teens or families who really want to lean into the thrill side of things. This is a great time to visit over a weekend and still beat the crowds.

Summer (prime family season)

Long days, warm weather, and a full slate of adventures. This is when many families from all over the Midwest plan their annual family vacation to Wisconsin. Summer trips combine high energy days with peaceful evenings spent swimming in the river or roasting s’mores around the campfire.

Early Fall (peaceful and low-key)

Cooler nights, changing leaves, and a quieter feel. Fall is the perfect season to see Marinette County’s spectacular fall foliage from a unique perspective on the river or in the forest canopy on a zipline. Great for families who like crisp air, cozy layers, and fewer crowds.

–> If you’re planning a first-time family vacation to Wildman Resort, summer or early fall is a fantastic place to start.

How Long Should We Stay?

Day trip? Weekend getaway? A full week of lodging by the river? It’s all up to you. Wildman’s adventure consulting team is excited to help you customize a package that fits your budget and timeframe! Most families find that 3–4 nights is the sweet spot:

  • Long enough to:

    • Enjoy multiple guided adventures
    • Have at least one slow, unstructured morning
    • Explore nearby attractions like waterfalls, museums, or hikes
  • Short enough to:

    • Fit into a busy summer schedule
    • Work around sports, camps, and work calendars
    • Drive home without feeling wiped out

If you’re coming from Chicago or Minneapolis (about a 5-hour drive), a long weekend works really well. Families traveling from further away (like Nebraska or Iowa) often opt for 4–5 nights and use Wildman as a basecamp, adding in local waterfalls or day trips to Marquette or Escanaba.

Where Should Our Family Stay On-Site?

One of the best parts of a Wildman family vacation is waking up on the river — not commuting to it.

All of Wildman’s lodging at the Peshtigo River Outpost is set along the gorgeous, roaring-rapids stretch of the Peshtigo River, surrounded by a pristine Northwoods forest of hemlocks and white pines. It’s one of my personal favorite spots in the whole state. You can literally hear the water as you fall asleep, and wake up to sunshine filtering down through the canopy.

You’ve got three main options:

Traditional Tent Camping

For families who want the full camp experience.

  • Your own firepit and picnic table at every site
  • Spacious sites with easy access to the Peshtigo River
  • Access to hot showers, flush toilets, and running water in the communal showerhouse
  • Ice, firewood, and snacks available at the campground office

Riverside Glamping

For those who want to feel close to nature but stay a little pampered.

  • More structure and comfort than a tent
  • Still gives you that “sleeping in the woods” feeling… but with a real mattress
  • Electricity, heat, and a mini-fridge for stashing brats and drinks
  • Great middle ground for families who are cabin-curious but camping-hearted

Deluxe Cabins

For families who want all the comforts of home on their Northwoods vacation.

  • Separate bedrooms
  • Options for small or large groups
  • Full kitchen (with dishes, silverware, and essentials)
  • Bathroom and shower
  • Heat (no A/C, but the forest cools down at night even in the heat summer!)
  • Some cabins include bedding; others are BYO — check the details before you pack!

No matter which you choose, all families have access to:

  • A sand volleyball court
  • A riverside hiking trail
  • A covered pavilion for group meals or rainy-day hangouts
  • River access for wading, fishing, or hammocking in earshot of the rapids

Larger families or groups traveling together can also book cabins side by side or neighboring campsites to create their own little adventure basecamp.

The campground at the Peshtigo River Outpost is naturally isolated, allowing young explorers to roam and play without the risk of wandering too far. Staying on-site at Wildman allows families to wind down and reconnect with each other after a big day of thrilling adventures.

What Adventures Should We Choose for Our Family?

This is where things get fun.

Every family vacation package at Wildman is custom-built around your family’s ages, comfort levels, and goals. Adventures are split between our two outposts, about an hour apart. It’s common for families to bounce between outposts during their stay! Here’s a simple way to think about your options:

Big Energy & Shared Adrenaline

Great for older kids, teens, and parents who are up for a challenge.

  • Menominee River Rafting
Work as a team to take on big, exciting waves in a group raft. This trip pairs a scenic flatwater float with the biggest rapids in the Midwest. Often paired with:
  • Zipline Tour
Over 1,900 feet of zipline across 5 lines, with views of the Menominee River and rolling hills of the historic Bombers Golf Course. A huge hit with adventurous families.
  • Paintball
Rowdy, messy, and ridiculously fun. Ideal for teen-heavy groups or families who love to play hard. All games are refereed by our guides… who might join in if you need some backup!
  • Peshtigo River Rafting
Captain your own single-person inflatable kayak through nearly-continuous splashy waves. It can be a workout, but you’ll be rewarded by fun, technical rapids and a sense of accomplishment.

Challenge + Teamwork Oriented

Wildman’s guided rock climbing expeditions offer adventurous families a unique way to see Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Perfect for building trust and cheering each other on.

  • Alpine Tower High Ropes Course
A vertical playground for learning to climb, belay, encourage, and support each other. This is a favorite for families who want growth and bonding, not just thrills.
  • Rock Climbing & Rappelling
Push your comfort zone together and celebrate that “we did it” feeling at the top. Nothing beats the view of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula after you conquer the vertical rock face!

Calm, Quiet, & Connection Focused

Kayaking on the High Falls Flowage offers the perfect opportunity to see wildlife and relax on the water.

Ideal for mixed-age families or folks who want some slower-paced time.

  • Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Test your balance and move at your own pace. Try some paddleboard yoga, go for a swim, or just take in the beauty of the Peshtigo State Forest. Kids love the novelty; parents love the quiet.
  • Flatwater Kayaking on High Falls Flowage
Gentle, scenic, and peaceful — perfect for families who want to see wildlife, paddle through lily pads, and soak up the sun from a kayak.

Many families like to mix one or two “big” adventure days with one “gentler” day:

Example: Menominee rafting + zipline one day, then Peshtigo rafting + Alpine Tower the next, with paddleboarding or kayaking as a last hurrah before heading home.

Sample 3–4 Day Family Adventure Itinerary

If you’re the type who likes to visualize the flow of a trip, here’s a sample itinerary families love.

Day 1 – Settle In & Find Your Rhythm

Afternoon arrival
Check in, settle into your cabin, glamping tent, or campsite, and ignore any emails from your boss. Let the kids explore the riverside trail, play volleyball, or cast a line at Horse Race Rapids or Five Foot Falls.

Dinner & campfire
Make your first meal together — outdoors if you can — and ease into Wildman’s simple rhythm. Families always tell us this first night is when everything starts to slow down.

Day 2 – High Adventure Day

Morning: Big adventure
Kick off your vacation with a guided adventure like:

  • Whitewater rafting on the Peshtigo River
  • Climb and learn to belay on the 60 foot Alpine Tower
  • Zipline platform to platform through the trees

You’ll get clear instruction from a professional guide, all gear provided, and encouragement every step of the way.

Lunch break
Picnic by the river or grab a catered meal if you’d rather spend more time relaxing.

Afternoon: Relax and take in the scenery

Paddleboard, kayak, or take a short hike. If you’re driving between outposts, check out the self-guided Marinette County Waterfall Tour! Many of these waterfalls are just a short detour off your route on Highway 141. (Dave’s Falls is a guide favorite!)

Evening
Another fire, another round of s’mores, another night of little moments you’ll want to remember.

Day 3 – Explore More

Morning: The second adventure
Most families choose a different challenge today:

  • The Menominee River for big-water rafting and taking on rapids as a team
  • Rock climbing and rappelling for a confidence boost
  • Kayaking for a peaceful morning on the water

Afternoon: Check Out Downtown
Pop into the nearby towns of Lakewood (20 minutes from the Peshtigo Outpost) or Iron Mountain (20 minutes from the Menominee Outpost) for some shopping or grabbing an ice cream treat!

Evening
On a clear night, catch an incredible view of the night sky. The milky way is usually visible, and it’s nearly impossible not to see a shooting star or two! (Guide Tip: walk up to the base of the Alpine Tower for the best open sky on the property!) To catch the best stargazing at the Peshtigo Outpost, plan your visit around a new moon.

Optional Day 4 – Bonus Day

If you’re staying longer, use this day to:

This is also a great day for families traveling from farther states like Iowa or Nebraska who need extra breathing room.

What Families Love Most About Staying On-Site

Staying right at the Peshtigo River Outpost is a huge part of what makes a Wildman family vacation feel so special. You’re not driving from one activity to another — you’re living in the center of it all.

Here’s why families choose to stay on-site:

1. Time slows down in the best way

Kids wander between cabins. Teens sit by the river. Parents make themselves a second cup of coffee and watch the water roll by. It’s peaceful in a way families rarely get at home.

2. You feel immersed in nature

The cool forest, the sound of the rapids, and the fresh air are sure to provide a nature-based reset even the busiest families

3. Everything’s close

The Alpine Tower, the rafting launch point, paddleboarding, the pavilion, the hiking trail — all within a short walk. Park the car once and enjoy the resort-style amenities provided all in one place.

4. Every lodging option has its own space

Every family gets a private firepit and picnic table, which invites relaxed meals and lingering conversations.

5. Larger groups can stay together

Two or three families can book cabins side-by-side or neighboring sites, creating your own cozy corner of camp. With cozy glamping cabins that sleep two, 15-person lodges, and everything in between, there’s something for everyone.

How to Make the Most of Your Family Vacation at Wildman

A family in a raft waves to the camera after their trip

Planning a trip can feel overwhelming — but a few simple tips will make your experience smooth, fun, and unforgettable.

1. Don’t Overschedule

Leave room to breathe. Adventures are exciting, but the in-between moments are where the magic settles in.

2. Mix Challenge + Chill

Pair “big” adventures with a slower-paced option:

  • Rafting both rivers + paddleboarding
  • Ziplining and paintball + hiking
  • Alpine Tower + kayaking + a self-guided waterfall tour

Your body (and your kids) will thank you.

3. Pack for Comfort

Bring layers — even in summer — and clothes that can get wet or dirty. We’ll provide all your safety gear, but make sure you have athletic clothing that you feel comfortable moving around in. Check out our blog about what to wear whitewater rafting!
And don’t forget:

  • Old shoes that stay on
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • A jacket for cool evenings and mornings

4. Let Kids Help Plan the Trip

Give them ownership: let them choose one adventure, pick dinner for a night, or be the “map captain.” Kids love helping build the experience. If they’re experiencing some nerves about a certain adventure… give us a call! We’d love to talk about the trip with them and help assuage fears.

5. Talk to Our Team

No question is too small. Our Adventure Consultants love helping families plan an amazing vacation in Northeast Wisconsin. We love planning adventures as much as we love adventuring ourselves. Seriously, give us a ring at 715-251-6091 or contact us to get started.

Nope! All adventures are guided by incredible staff and are beginner-friendly. Many families try activities here they’ve never done before.
