FAQs About Rock Climbing in Wisconsin

We’ll handle all the details for you! Choosing Wildman means you’re getting a fully guided rock climbing trip in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our guides transport you to and from the climbing spot, handle all safety gear, and coach you through climbs for your skill level, from beginners to experienced climbers. Unlike many statewide climbing spots that require you to bring gear or find routes on your own, Wildman gives you instruction, equipment, and access to a remote climbing location. It’s the perfect trip for first-timers who want to discover rock climbing the right way while enjoying the rugged beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Beginners (age 12+) are welcome, and our guides are there every step of the way to teach climbing techniques and safety basics.

While it’s helpful to be in relatively good shape, guided rock climbing with Wildman is suitable for first-timers and more experienced climbers! There’s a 15-minute hike that includes some elevation gain and a bit of rock scrambling to access the climb. While you don’t need any technical climbing experience, you should be confident walking on uneven terrain.

If you’re looking for an even more beginner friendly trip, or have kids younger than 12, the Alpine Climbing Tower is a fantastic alternative.

Wildman’s rock climbing adventures begin at the Menominee River Outpost near Niagara, Wisconsin. You’ll meet your guides, then take a scenic drive across the border into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This region of scenic cliffs and quartz composite rock formations offer a beautiful and sturdy climb. You’ll hike through a dense forest, past a swimming hole and waterfall on Pine Creek, and (if you visit at the right time!) a stand of wild blueberries. Climbing in the UP is as visually rewarding as it is physically engaging. After you’ve conquered the 60-foot rock face, your guide will bring you back to the Menominee River Outpost in time for your next adventure!

Wildman’s rock climbing trip is a half-day adventure. Most of our guests combine multiple activities in order to create a full weekend of adventure! Other activities at the Menominee River Outpost include battling it out on the paintball field, whitewater rafting on the Menominee River, a platform-to-platform zipline tour, or a casual round of golf at Bombers Bar and Golf Course.

Wisconsin has great climbing areas like Devil’s Lake State Park, known for its quartzite routes and long climbing history, but those areas typically require climbers to bring their own gear, find routes, and have technical knowledge to stay safe. Wildman’s guided trips are perfect for climbers who want instruction, equipment, and a structured adventure — making climbing accessible even if you’re new to the sport. Whether you’re curious about the sport or an experienced climber looking for a fun guided experience, Wildman adds support and convenience to your rock climbing day.

There’s inherent risk with any outdoor adventure, but your group’s safety is our top priority. Every Wildman rock climbing trip is led by experienced guides using professional belay and safety systems, helmets, and quality climbing gear. Guides walk you through how to climb, how to trust the rope systems, and how to challenge yourself while staying within your comfort and skill level. Guests are on belay at all times! This guided approach gives climbers confidence without the worry of handling gear incorrectly or navigating routes alone.

We’ll provide all the safety gear. If you have your own climbing shoes or chalk bag, feel free to bring those with you! If you don’t have those, no worries — any tight-fitting closed toe shoe will work great.

The guided trips here at Wildman are a great way to be introduced to the many adventure opportunities available here in the Midwest. We are here to help you plan a great trip that will suit your interests and experience level. Let us know how we can help!
