Spring Rafting on the Peshtigo River: What to Expect at Wildman Adventure Resort

When the snow starts to melt and the Northwoods begin to thaw, something amazing happens in Northeastern Wisconsin: the Peshtigo River comes alive.
Spring rafting on the Peshtigo River is a one-of-a-kind adventure that combines big water, wild scenery, and adrenaline-pumping fun. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a first-time adventurer, spring is the best time to catch the river at its most powerful. Here’s everything you need to know before you book your trip.
Why Spring Rafting?
More water = more fun. The Peshtigo River swells with snowmelt in the spring, turning already exciting Class II-IV rapids into a high-energy ride. This is when the river is at its most thrilling. (To learn more about the classification of rapids, check out another blog post!)
It’s guide-approved. Ask any of our veteran guides, and they’ll tell you: spring rafting is their favorite. “The Peshtigo in the spring is unpredictable, fast, and SO much fun,” says Casey, one of our returning guides. “Every run is different, and it really wakes up your soul after a long winter.”
What our guests are saying
“I did the Peshtigo in April with my college buddies. We were soaked, freezing, and smiling the entire time. I’ve rafted in Colorado and this still stands out as one of my favorites!” – Eric, Chicago
“It was my husband’s birthday and we wanted to do something wild. Spring rafting on the Peshtigo delivered. Unforgettable!” – Rachel, Green Bay
What to Wear to Stay Warm
Yes, it can be cold. But you’ll be prepared. Here’s what we recommend:
- Wetsuit (provided by Wildman): Traps body heat while allowing movement
- Splash jacket (also provided): Protects from wind and water
- Wool socks: It sounds silly, but they stay warm even when wet
Quick-dry base layers: Think athletic or thermal wear. That old wool sweater in your closet is a great option, too. Remember, avoid cotton!
- We have your footwear: Wildman provides neoprene booties to keep your toes as warm as possible
- Optional: gloves or neoprene mitts if your hands get cold easily
Our guides will help gear you up before the trip so you feel confident and comfortable. We also have a whole blog post just about this topic here!
Tips for First-Time Spring Rafters
- Trust your guide. They’re trained, certified, and stoked to get you down the river safely.
- Don’t be afraid to fall in (it happens!). That’s part of the story you’ll tell later. Your guide will prepare you for how to make a quick reentry to the raft!
- Bring dry clothes for after. Changing into warm gear post-trip makes a big difference.
- Eat before your trip. You’ll burn calories and be glad you fueled up.
- Book early. Spring rafting season is short and fills up fast.
